Gambling on le Grand Paris

AUJOURD’HUI, VILLE-MUSÉE: demain, métropole du 21ème siècle (mange mes shorts, Londres!) Il y a de quoi s’inspirer à la Cité de l’Architecture, où 10 visions du Grand Paris viennent d’être dévoilées.
La plus frappante est sans doute la vision d’Antoine Grumbach, une métropole qui englobe Rouen et Le Havre. (L’idée n’est pas tout à fait originale car c’était Bonaparte qui l’avait conçue d’abord et l’on sait qu’il a eu pas mal d’idées en son temps.) Toujours en mode un peu fantaisie, la projection de Vitry comme future agora du monde (autour du monstrueux hôtel Chinagora) m’a plu. M’enfin, pourquoi pas?

Richard Rogers a évoqué un coeur qui bat en synergie avec son corps; le Groupe Descartes a proposé des remparts de forêts contre le béton. Christian Portzamparc est resté dans la stratosphère intellectuelle, avec un projet de rhizomes, de Hestia et Hermès (le dieu, pas la marque de luxe). A l’opposé de Roland Castro, champion de la banlieue nord-est, avec une véritable profusion de projets sont présentés façon BD technicolor.

Mais c’était surtout chez Jean Nouvel que j’ai senti une frisson d’anticipation à ce que pourrait être l’avenir de la Ville Lumière. À la fois impliqué et cohérent, son plan à neuf points veut créer de “hauts-lieux” extra-muros (comme les rhizomes, mais plus séducteurs); il cherche a exploiter les toits de Paris et à embellir ses façades modernes pour mieux mettre en valeur ses façades historiques. Et le nom de la “Nouvel” ville ? – “Paris m”.
Parce que Paris, on l’m, tous, n’est-ce pas?

AT LAST, a first glimpse of Le Grand Pari(s). At the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (the city’s architecture museum) 10 visions of Greater Paris have just been unveiled.
It’s from this pick‘n’mix inspiration that the French capital of the future will take form. No more Museum-City (eat pants, Londres!)
The headline-grabber was inevitably going to be Antoine Grumbach’s metropolis, embracing Rouen and Le Havre (cue seagulls). It’s not an entirely original idea: Napoleon came up with it first and not all of his ideas were that brilliant. Closer to, I was taken with a proposal to turn Vitry (south Paris) into a world marketplace, revolving around the preposterous Chinagora complex. Why not?

Richard Rogers evokes a heart that beats for its limbs, instead of sapping all their resources, while Groupe Descartes offer us ramparts of forest to fend off the concrete. Christian Portzamparc is up in the intellectual ether, with a proposal resting on rhizomes, Hestia and Hermès (that’s the deity, not the luxury brand, by the way.)
At the other end of the spectrum, Roland Castro, champion of the suburbs, serves up a bewildering array of specific projects in zingy technicolor.
But it was Jean Nouvel’s presentation that gave me stirrings of excitement about what the City of Light could be. Logical and committed, his nine point plan rests on the creation of “high points” (a bit like rhizomes, only sexier). Under his vision, Paris’ amazing roof spaces would be exploited as a feature, and a harmonious blend of modern and historic facades would set off the latter. He’s even suggested a name for the new entity: Paris m. v txtual. And what’s not to m-er?
