Paris: wildlife where you least expect it

THE NOCTURNAL wildlife had left its own traces – an empty vodka bottle, a few crumpled cans, some soiled papers.

But as I crossed this small city-central park for the first time in my life, I was suddenly stopped in my tracks by this heron. Without warning, it stretched its wings, leapt across the pond and scooped up its prey, a young rat. Then it gulped it down whole. Moments later, it was eyeing the carp again, as if nothing had happened.

Gratuitous wildlife watching – in the shadow of the Palais de Chaillot, right in the heart of Paris.

  1. That’s fantastic and a great photo. Perhaps he’s employed by the city of Paris!
